Share the harvest
In Fauquier County, the food insecurity rate is 6.2% overall or, to put it another way, 4,300 (1,330 are children) of our neighbors are hungry. Share the Harvest was formed to try and help. We started by putting together a Hunger Symposium in which we invited persons from various organizations to speak to representatives of various churches, members of the school system, and other volunteer organizations. Our hope was that, ultimately, we would develop a coalition in order to address hunger, particularly in the Northern Piedmont area.
Now, since the pandemic, it is even more crucial that we step forward and help. We partnered with Grace Episcopal Church for a Thanksgiving Food Drive. As a result, through our efforts at least 135 turkeys and food (including the turkeys) totaling at least 2,500 pounds was delivered to the Fauquier Food Bank by members of our Emmanuel family. Our partnership with Grace led to an even greater coalition for a Christmas Food Drive. We partnered with Grace, Leeds, Marshall United Methodist, The Plains Community League, and other groups to put together 70 boxes of food and toys. We also delivered over 240 jars of applesauce to FISH for their Christmas baskets. Not only are there families in need of food, there is so much energy waiting to be harnessed to help those in need.
